Siblings Felix and Jabari, whose mum Aysa was rescued from war-torn Ukraine, have received a certificate of good health.

They were given a full MOT last week by  specialist vets from the International Zoo Veterinary Group.

Director of Animals Dr Charlotte MacDonald said  : “The team conducted a round of check-ups at Lion Country, looking at young Felix and Jabari's heart, teeth, lungs, stomach, skin, joints and feet. Jabari also had one of his claws trimmed. 

“We’re very happy with their progress and  the checks, leaving us with no concerns whatsoever.”

Rangers identify the two by their spots, noting specific and unique patterns to tell Felix and Jabari apart in photos.

Home of Lion Rescue, Lion Country was originally home to the 13 Romanian Lions who were rescued back in 2010. Today it is home to lions from rescue missions from the Ukrainian war-zone. Aysa, Teddi, Santa and Emi. They  live together with the three cubs Felix, Nala and Jabari born in March last year and make a playful and mischievous group.

The other pride of three, who were rescued in 2025, Oleg, Rafael and Shanti live in the second of three reserves across the lake. All were traumatised when they first arrived, but are now happy and settled in Lion Country.

Dr MacDonald added “The procedure went smoothly  and the results are looking positive, which is great news for everyone.

“The boys came around really well and were soon back to their normal selves. They are known for being very active and curious."

The Wildlife Foundation, the charity based at the park, raised the funds to cover the specialist transport costs for the 1,700 mile trip.

Now fully recuperated and reunited with their sister Nala.the duo can be seen by visitors in Lion Country, the seven-acre habitat comprised of three specially designed reserves.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park, which puts conservation at the heart of all its activities,  has seen a total of 17 lions brought to Lion Country over the years.

Their first rescue won international accolades for saving the lions from horrific conditions in Romania and giving them a new home in Yorkshire. The success of this encouraged the park to take on a second mission in 2024 with the rescue of Aysa and her cubs, Emi, Santa and Teddi, who are now three years old. Mum Aysa  then gave birth to the trio.
